Arizona State junior shortstop Deven Marrero was selected 24th overall by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Monday.
Marrero is the 27th Sun Devil to be taken in the first round and is the highest draft pick since Mike Leake was selected eighth overall in 2009. He is the fourth ASU player drafted in the top 25 in the past five seasons following Leake, and Brett Wallace at No. 13 and Ike Davis at No. 18 in 2008.
He is the third Sun Devil in the past 10 years to be drafted by the Red Sox and joins former Sun Devil shortstop Dustin Pedroia in the organizaton.
"Whether it's big hits or big plays, Deven's always in the mix when good things happen," head coach Tim Esmay said. "Not too often do you get to coach someone like that in your career, and not just from a baseball standpoint. He's a great human being and a great young man."
Marrero, who made 145 career starts in three seasons at ASU, was the 2011 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. He was a First Team Pac-12 All-Conference selection in 2011 and 2012, and earned all-conference accolades in each of his three years. He was a First Team Academic All-District VIII honoree in 2012 and a member of the second team in 2011. He set an ASU freshman record with his team-leading .397 batting average (62-156) in 2010 en route to garnering Freshman All-America honors, and had the game-winning walk-off single in game one and scored the game-winning run in game two of 2010 Tempe Super Regional.
He was a 17th round selection (509th overall) of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft.
The ASU baseball program has had 380 players drafted by the Major Leagues, which is the most all-time among NCAA schools. Former Sun Devil outfielder Rick Monday was the first-ever MLB Draft pick in 1965 when he was selected No. 1 overall by the Kansas City Athletics.
Other notable Sun Devil first-round draftees include No. 1 overall picks Floyd Bannister (1976) and Bob Horner (1978), Reggie Jackson (1966) and Mike Kelly (1991) at No. 2, and Barry Bonds (1985) at No. 6.
The Milwaukee Brewers took 2013 signee Clint Coulter 26th overall.
Coulter, a catcher from Union High School in Camas, Washington, was a Second Team All-American by Perfect Game and First-Team All-Region, and the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League's Player of the Year. He is listed at 6 feet 3 inches and 210 pounds, and was the Class 3A state wrestling champion at 189 pounds his sophomore season before giving it up to focus solely on baseball. He was one of four high school players to accept an invitation to attend the Major League Draft in New York City.
