Barrett celebrates 25 years of excellence

In the past 25 years, ASU’s Barrett Honors College has become one of the leading honors institutions in the nation. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Mark Jacobs, vice provost and dean of Barrett, penned an op-ed for AZ Central explaining how that came to be and highlighting the remarkable caliber of its students and faculty.

In the piece, Jacobs recalls the shared vision between himself and ASU President Michael Crow to turn Barrett into the kind of learning environment that offered more than any of the other 65 honors colleges in the United States – that was a decade ago. Today, Barrett’s student population has more than doubled – to 5,000 – with the academic quality and geographic and ethnic diversity of its students increasing as well.

“More than 25 percent of Barrett students come from out of state, and … a surprisingly high portion of graduates stay … living and working (in AZ) and contributing to the local economy,” says Jacobs. “Barrett not only has helped staunch the brain drain from the state, but stimulates brain gain for the state by attracting bright students to Arizona from around the nation.”

Barrett isn’t just known for its excellent students, though. The college also offers a considerable variety of specialized honors courses and a top-notch faculty. And just this past May, Barrett reached a milestone with a class of more than 700 students whose graduation rate with honors was the highest ever recorded – at Barrett or at any other honors college in the country.
