Susanna Marinez-Conde (standing), director of the Visual Neuroscience Lab at the Barrows Neurological Institute in Phoenix, led the audience through some simple experiments during her presentation on the neural bases of human visual experience during the ASU Origins Project “Deception: an Evening of Magic and Illumination.”

Lawrence Krauss, director of the Origins Project, hosted the Origins Project Great Debate.

Since it was an evening of magic and illumination, slight of hand artist Jamy Ian Swiss demonstrated some magic and later supplied some illumination and explanation.

Joshua Jay (right) got some help from the audience during his presentation involving showing a card trick from back to front as well as front to back.

Stephen Macknik, Behavioral Neurophysiology lab director at the Barrows Neurological Institute, talked about his research into visual awareness and visibility.

Robert Trivers, professor of anthropology at Rutgers, discussed evolution and self-deception during his presentation.

Social psychologist Carol Tavris carried the conversation forward, involving her work in critical thinking, feminism and criticism of pseudoscience. The next Great Debate is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2013. For more information, visit: https://origins.asu.edu/

Joseph A. Smith, monitor of the Office of Mortgage Settlement Oversight, spoke at the Great Hall of the O’Connor College of Law during a daylong conference exploring homeowner’s rights under the National Mortgage Settlement Act.

The Changemaker Central Third Lunch on ASU’s Polytechnic campus featured Go Daddy’s chief scientist David Koopman (center).

The Faculty Reading Room in the Language and Literature Building was transformed into a “mead hall” as the Beowulf Communal Reading commenced, Oct. 24. The epic poem was read aloud in both Old and Modern English. This year’s event was part of the English department’s Homecoming festivities.

Victor Parra, a graduate teaching assistant and English doctoral candidate, follows along during the Beowulf reading. The Beowulf Symposium alternates years with a celebration around medieval author Geoffrey Chaucer and is a cooperative effort of the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, the ASU Department of English, and the ASU Institute for Humanities.

Michael Amoako, a computer science major from Mesa, is greeted by Sparky at the end of the Sparky’s Challenge 5K race on ASU’s West Campus. The event kicked off 2012 Homecoming activities.
