Nancy Dallett, academic associate from ASU's School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, received the Dan Shilling Public Humanities Scholar Award from Thomas Wilson of the Arizona Humanities Council. The award recognizes a humanities scholar who has enhanced public awareness and understanding of the role that the humanities play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. Dallett has been practicing public history methodology for over 30 years across the United States on projects including museum exhibits, radio documentaries, historic preservation, interpretive signage, oral histories, cultural heritage tourism, and including public history to create more nuanced and collaborative public art. She has served as principal investigator for over 20 National Park Service projects including administrative histories, historic resource studies, cultural landscape interpretive signage, and museum planning and design.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Arizona Humanities Council, in partnership with ASU Project Humanities, presented Rita Dove as the keynote speaker for "Sharing Words, Changing Worlds." The Pulitzer Prize winning author and poet laurete shared poems from her most recent book, "Sonata Mulattica," about a young mulatto violinist's encounters with Beethoven.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Student Recreation Center on ASU’s Polytechnic campus took place on April 16 with all the traditions observed. The student recreation fields on the Tempe campus were used as a landing zone as Army ROTC cadets boarded National Guard Black Hawk helicopters the morning of April 12.

The cadets were flown to Camp Navajo, east of Flagstaff, Ariz., to participate in four days of training. The ASU students will be joining their counterparts from the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Grand Canyon University and Embry-Riddle who are also taking part in the operation.

The first-ever event brought about 1,300 K-8 students to campus to take part in hands-on activities and tour labs to learn about engineering. Raytheon provided significant support for the event.

Michael NiCastro, a senior sustainability major, explains the research on his poster to David McNeil, an environmental service manager with the City of Tempe. NiCastro, who did his internship under McNeil, researched the relationship between restaurants and sustainability and helped launch a sustainable grease, oil and fats cooperative. The poster session was the culminating event of SOS 484, the capstone internship class, required of all graduating undergrads majoring in sustainability.

The ASU Staff Council celebrated the service and achievements of all the ASU staff with a BBQ on the Alumni Lawn in front of Old Main. The West campus event will take place on April 24 and the Downtown Phoenix campus event is scheduled for May 1.
