The annual 12-mile hike for Army ROTC students took place early in the morning, April 7, in Phoenix's South Mountain Park. Blurred by a time exposure, the event’s 142 participants prepare.

Staring at 4:45 a.m., at the gatehouse, the students hiked out to the San Juan overlook at the west end of the park and back. Due to a last minute malfunction of her pack, sophomore Alicia Johnson jogged the route without a pack and was the first to finish.

Lane Laswell (left) finished first with time of 2:15. Jamie Reeves (right) caught up with Laswell for a while but ended up falling back and finishing 2nd, two minutes behind.

The route has its surprises – heading west, there is a long easy downhill followed by a slight climb at the end. However, it’s a two-mile climb on the return trip. Participants keep well hydrated on the march.

The military cadets mixed with weekend civilian traffic. Participants had to finish the 12-mile hike in 3 hours.

After finishing, Jarred Rayes gets some stretching assistance from Matt Hoemke as Anthony Mueller (center) and Michael Perry (right) loosen up on their own.

Sen. John McCain (center) holds a flexible display while touring the ASU Flexible Display Center. Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan (left), senior vice president for Knowledge Enterprise Development and Nick Colaneri, director of the Flexible Display Center join McCain. The ASU Flexible Display Center is an Army-sponsored research facility cooperatively managed with the Army Research Laboratory and brings industry, academia and governmental organizations together to develop flexible, lightweight, rugged displays and electronics.

Fred Conrad of the New York Times briefs Jessi Nichols, a Graphics Information Technology (GIT) student, prior to a shoot at the Anaheim Angels training facility in Tempe, Ariz. Conrad asked the GIT program chair and longtime friend Penny Ann Dolin if she could find some of students willing to assist him when he was in the Valley shooting Cactus League Spring Training. The last Public History Brown Bag event of the semester featured Bill Rorabaugh of the University of Washington. Rorabaugh is working on a book on hippies and the 1960s, on which he based his presentation.

Karl Jacoby talks to a group of Apaches from San Carlos, Ariz., and American Indian Studies students from ASU who toured an exhibit at the Heard Museum, titled "Beyond Geronimo." Jacoby, who is a professor at Brown University, was discussing his book, "Shadows at Dawn, An Apache Massacre and the Violence of History," as part of his visit to ASU. The professor also discussed historical research methods at the Labriola Center and with the faculty of the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies and the School of Transborder Studies.

Nada Sarsour, an elementary education major, makes a last minute check of her resumes. Sansour and other students of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College were gathered in the Memorial Union for Education Interview Day.

Real-life guests mingled amongst the figurative imagery created by artist Kelsey Viola Wiskirchen at the opening for her Masters of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, “Handed On.” Wiskirchen, a fibers major, created the woven and stitched panels that are suspended from the ceiling of the Harry Wood Gallery. The installation reflects on the role that weaving plays in today’s societies: sharing of stories, continuation of tradition and creation of new opportunities, as well as the camaraderie and empowerment that women throughout history have shared through the creation of textiles. The show is on view through April 20. For more information about this event and others at Harry Wood Gallery, visit http://art.asu.edu/gallery/harrywood/exhibitions.php.

As the semester begins to wind down, students fill up the plaza of Hayden Library. Soon students will be studying for final exam week, which runs from April 26-May 2.
