ASU hosted students and their families over the weekend for the annual Family Weekend event. The ASU concert band played for those gathered in attendance on Alumni Lawn.

Governor Jan Brewer signed HB 2676, a bill passed by the Arizona legislature that allows the Arizona Board of Regents to set up a University Athletic Facilities District (UAFD) during the President’s Tailgate Event in the Carson Ballroom. The UAFD will collect revenues from commercial lease assessments for the improvement of property for new or existing athletic facilities at public universities. Joining ASU President Michael Crow on stage were a number of valley political leaders.

The Sun Devils fell in a close game to a top-ranked opponent on Saturday night, losing to #5 ranked Oregon 42-31. However, the Devils' defensive efforts improved against the Ducks as Oregon’s LaMichael James found out as he attempted to run the ball.

Participants in the 4th Annual Algal Biomass Organization Conference toured ASU’s Polytechnic campus to view the university’s efforts in algae research. Amit Vasavada of General Atomics looks at algae grown in one of the biotechnology labs.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer hands an official proclamation to Bill Harris of the Arizona Science Foundation during the Algal Biomass Organization Conference in Scottsdale. The governor had just announced that the State of Arizona was making two million dollars in funding available for algae research. Read more.

Laurie Leshin, deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Exploration Systems Mission Directorate, spent the day on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus discussing the current challenges and opportunities of catalyzing a worldwide space exploration movement and the role ASU has to play.

Returning to ASU is a homecoming for Leshin. After attending Tempe public schools, she received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from ASU and her doctorate in geochemistry from the California Institute of Technology. She later joined the ASU geological sciences faculty. In 2003, she was appointed director of the Center for Meteorite Studies and also became the first College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty member to be named a Dean’s Distinguished Professor.

Erica Reyes, a global studies major, appeared on national television as ASU's KAET Channel 8 played host to the Education Nation event, an interactive summit with Arnie Duncan, Secretary of Education and hosted by Tom Brokaw broadcast on MSNBC.

Attorney and author Walter Echo-Hawk spoke at the Great Hall of the College of Law on the Tempe campus and afterward signed copies of his new book: "In the Courts of the Conqueror: The Ten Worst Indian Law Cases Ever Decided."

This week's Public History Brown Bag Series featured Victoria Thompson speaking on “Reading Public Monuments: Henri IV and the French Revolution.” Thompson is director of History Graduate Studies for the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies. She uses cultural and social history approaches to the study of women, gender, and the history of urban spaces. Claudia Dreifus spoke to a full house in the Carson Ballroom in Old Main Tuesday afternoon. Dreifus and Andrew Hacker are the authors of a controversial and highly acclaimed new book “Higher Education? How Colleges are Wasting Our Money and Failing Our Kids – and What We Can Do About It.”

Christine Wilkinson, senior vice president and secretary of the university (left), hosted Joon Yun Park, governor of Jeollanam-do Province in Korea, when the official visited ASU’s Tempe campus. A Memoranda of Understanding between his province and the university was signed during the visit.
