ASU takes the cake

December 16, 2009

ARAMARK/ASU Catering recently competed against local resorts, restaurants and caterers to see who had the best looking and best tasting cake in the Cake at the Lake contest, celebrating the 10th birthday of Tempe Town Lake.

ARAMARK/ASU Catering won first place for Best Tasting Cake. The cakes also were judged in other areas, such as Best Decorated Cake and Best Birthday Themed Cake.

Rosie Garcia, the head pastry chef at Arizona State University, was behind the sweet victory. Garcia has been baking professionally for 38 years and has been the head pastry chef at ASU for the past 23 years. For the competition, Garcia baked a Tres Leches Cake with coconut pineapple mousse, topped with buttercream frosting. In honor of Tempe Town Lake’s birthday, a miniature Sparky sat in a rowboat atop the cake.

Slices of cake were provided to the public for a minimum $1 donation. Proceeds went to the Tempe Community Council’s Tempe Karma program.
