ASU siblings make music despite disabilities

A trio of siblings, known as the MacIntyre Family Singers, have been chosen from among 100 aspiring U.S. and international soloists and ensembles to recieve the prestigious International Young Soloist Award. The ensemble includes ASU graduate Scott MacIntyre and his brother Todd MacIntyre, an ASU business undergraduate; their sister Katelyn, 16, completes the trio.

The siblings have been invited to perform at the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in addition to the $5,000 award.

"I was always exposed to music because Scott was playing," says Todd.

Both Scott and Katelyn were born with a visual impairment that only gives them a field of vision of a few degrees. "

"It's like looking through a straw at the world," says Scott. "Because of the lack of vision, I tried to fill that space with sound.

"If you believe you'll fail, you'll fail," adss Scott. "People with disabilities can accomplish things like this - if you set your mind to it."
