ASU Piano Prep/Conservatory program celebrates 22 years


<p>Celebrating its 22nd year, the ASU Piano Prep/Conservatory Program invites new students to take a turn at the ivories. Interviews for beginners and for students with prior piano study, aged 7-17, will be held from 2-6 p.m., Aug. 19-20 in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music, room W255, 40 E. Gammage Parkway, on the Tempe campus. The program offers appointments for advanced students as requested. Tuition for the 2009-10 academic year can be paid in installments; and is $1,304 for Piano Preparatory; or $1655 for Piano Conservatory.</p><separator></separator><p>Since its inception in 1988, the Piano Preparatory/Conservatory Program at ASU’s <a href="http://herbergercollege.asu.edu/&quot; title="Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts">Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts</a> has provided students with opportunities for excellent music instruction from experienced model teachers and selected ASU performance-pedagogy graduate students. The highly successful program is known throughout the Valley for its creative approach to piano study for children. </p><separator></separator><p>Jan Thompson, founding director and professor of music, cites the combination of group and individual lessons as one of the keys to the program’s success. Thompson coordinates the program, linking teachers and preparatory students with university piano pedagogy courses and observers in a laboratory-school setting. The program offers quality music instruction in a creative and motivating learning environment. </p><separator></separator><p>Piano Prep/Conservatory students enjoy a well-planned and varied curriculum emphasizing the development of musicianship skills through piano study, performance and participation in the National Music Certificate Program; the highly successful curriculum of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto.
