ASU offers accredited engineering program entirely online

Today KTAR covered a story about Arizona State University’s electrical engineering undergraduate program, which is the first accredited program of its kind to be offered completely online.  Students can completely the necessary course work from home, doing labs and even building circuits using their home computer.

Professors provide office hours via video-conferencing software, Skype.  “The students can set appointments, for example, during the weekend,” said Marco Saraniti, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering professor.

The program offers video lectures which students can view at their own pace, whenever it is convenient for them.  There is a calendar for viewing the clips, but there is also a lot of flexibility.

“If you keep quality high, [online degrees] could be a viable alternative to the traditional campus experience,” Saraniti said.
