ASU community to vote on Sparky costume update
Arizona State University is inviting students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans alike to participate in a vote beginning April 22 to determine the latest updates to be made to the Sparky mascot costume.
The university released an updated version of the costume for its beloved mascot, Sparky the Sun Devil, on March 1. Since that announcement, ASU has received feedback from some of its constituents about the design of the costume.
Over the past few weeks, university leadership has worked in coordination with student leaders, the Sun Devil Coalition Advocacy Board, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Alumni Board and Chapter Leaders, and representatives from the Sun Devil Club Board to select final voting options.
Voting on the update will take place from Monday, April 22 through Sunday, May 5. Fans will be able to select one of four options with changes to the mascot head and face. The winning look will be announced on the official ASU Twitter and Facebook accounts on May 7. The new costume will make its debut at the beginning of the 2013 academic and athletic year.
The mascot costume has been changed more than a dozen times since the character was first created in 1946 by Disney artist Berk Anthony.
To vote for your favorite design, please visit sparky.asu.edu between 12:01 a.m. on April 22 through May 5 at 11:59 p.m.
