ASU Alumni Association chapter network reaches milestone

September 10, 2013

The chapter network of the Arizona State University Alumni Association has surpassed the 100 mark, with the addition of several new groups at the association’s August board meeting.

The Alumni Association board approved the formation of seven of the organization’s latest chapter groups: Inland Northwest, Northern Arizona, Southern Colorado, Argentina, the Republic of Korea, Senegal and Singapore. This brings the total number of groups operated by the association and its alumni volunteers to 102, including 37 geographically based groups, 20 academic affiliates focused on a specific degree program at the university and 12 special interest connections, which represent alumni who have been involved in everything from military service to their country to graduates of its Leadership Scholarship Program. The association, which has expanded its global outreach efforts over the past two years, now has 33 international connection groups representing Sun Devil alums worldwide.

Christine K. Wilkinson, president of the Alumni Association, said that the expansion of the chapter network represented a significant milestone for the association’s engagement efforts.

“We’ve more than tripled the number of connection groups we support in less than a decade,” she said. “This is due in large part to our alumni who are moving to various places around the globe and many of them want to continue celebrating their Sun Devil spirit and giving back to the university through volunteerism.”

The primary goal of chapters is to keep alumni connected to ASU, whether it be through their academic program, current geographic location or registered student organizations or university sponsored student groups in which they participated. Chapters sponsor a range of activities for their members, including networking events, Sun Devil game-watching celebrations, outdoor recreational activities and service-oriented volunteer projects, such as ASU Cares and Pat’s Run Shadow Runs. Many chapters give back to the next generation of ASU students by providing mentoring services, hosting Sun Devil Send-Offs for incoming students or by awarding scholarships.
