‘Arizona Republic’ quotes C. Hessick on expedited appeal
An article in the July 29 edition of The Arizona Republic, in which legal experts discussed alternatives to settling Arizona’s dispute with the federal government over the state’s new immigration law, included comments from Associate Professor Carissa Byrne Hessick.
In the article, “Arizona will file expedited appeal to lift SB 1070,” by reporters Craig Harris, Alia Rau and Ginger Rough, Hessick said a ruling by the three-member appellate panel on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit could be appealed to a larger group of justices in the circuit.
She said that it is rare in most appeals courts, but the 9th Circuit has been more willing to do it. Such a ruling could then be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
