Sun Devil 100 honoree forges engineering path shaped by Sun Devil values
Amit Sharma is no stranger to the innovative spirit that has shaped Arizona State University’s approach to higher education. In fact, he lives it every day.
For Sharma, ’99 MS in mechanical engineering, his time as a Sun Devil was just the start of a fruitful career in engineering.
Hailing from India, Sharma knew he wanted “to be at the intersection of engineering excellence, innovation and global opportunity.”
That’s why he came to ASU in the late 1990s, an experience he said led him to grow both professionally and personally. Through experimental thesis research, industry exposure and the chance to learn from ASU’s vastly diverse student population, Sharma understood that interdisciplinary collaboration was necessary for innovation, a belief that would become the foundation of his storied professional journey,
“ASU gave me far more than a degree,” Sharma said. “It gave me a global mindset, a lasting respect for innovation and a belief that engineering improves lives most when it is combined with curiosity, collaboration and purpose.”
Now the managing director and CEO of Tata Consulting Engineers, located in Mumbai, India, Sharma is at the forefront of the modern engineering landscape, where he aims to build lasting infrastructure and systems with intentionality at every step of the way.
His induction into the Sun Devil 100 Class of 2026 in April represented a unique opportunity to reflect on his journey as a Sun Devil, professional and business leader.
“I see it as a reflection of many other people: teachers, professors, mentors, colleagues, clients, friends and family,” Sharma said about the recognition that comes with joining the Sun Devil 100. “No meaningful accomplishment is ever achieved alone.”
Sharma leads Tata Consulting Engineers’ ambitious expansion into international markets, including the United States, a chapter that represents the company’s continued evolution into a global engineering powerhouse.
His leadership is defined by his commitment to lifelong learning.
“Purpose, passion and persistence matter far more than short-term outcomes. Technologies will evolve, industries will change and new challenges will appear. What endures is the willingness to keep learning, keep adapting and keep contributing with integrity.”
As he guides the future of Tata Consulting Engineers, Sharma is looking to cultivate sustainable growth with Sun Devil values at heart.
“Leadership is service and stewardship,” Sharma said. “Never lose sight of the human consequence of your decisions. The leaders who shape the future most positively will be those who combine innovation with humility, ambition with purpose and global thinking with genuine care for people.”
