The Humanities Institute at Arizona State University is pleased to announce that Daniel Gilfillan, associate professor in the School of International Letters and Cultures, has been named the 2026–27 Research Development Fellow. The fellowship, which runs from July 2026 through June 2027, supports faculty whose research advances the humanities in innovative and interdisciplinary directions.
Gilfillan's work sits at the intersection of sound studies, media theory and the environmental humanities, with a focus on listening practices that challenge human-centered ways of knowing. He is currently completing his second book, “The Unsung Planet: Resilience, Resonance, and Our Sonic Imagination,” which examines how artistic and scientific approaches to sound can foster new forms of ecological awareness, relationality and multispecies entanglement. His first book, “Pieces of Sound: German Experimental Radio,” remains a touchstone in the field of radio and sound culture.
During the fellowship year, Gilfillan will collaborate with the Humanities Institute on programming development, national alliance-building and grant initiatives.
Institute Director Ron Broglio shares, “It is a pleasure to work with Professor Gilfillan. We will benefit from his interests in environmental humanities, attention economies and development of research platforms. Dan has been actively involved with the institute for over a decade, holds its institutional history and is an excellent spokesperson for our research endeavors.”
