The Arizona State University Police Department received $96,045 in grant funding from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to support a range of traffic safety initiatives, including pedestrian and bicycle safety, DUI and impaired-driving enforcement, and targeted traffic operations in and around ASU campuses.

With four campuses across Maricopa County — Tempe, Downtown Phoenix, West Valley and Polytechnic — ASU experiences a constant flow of students, faculty, staff and visitors. The GOHS grants help ASU Police create a safe, community-centered environment for everyone who travels through or visits the university.

“Safety is and always has been a shared responsibility,” said ASU Police Chief John Thompson. “Whether someone is walking, biking or driving on or near campus, our goal is to make sure everyone gets home safely. These grants allow our officers to focus on preventing dangerous behaviors that negatively impact our community. We appreciate the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for supporting these important initiatives.”

As part of its commitment to enhancing regional traffic safety, ASU PD will host the East Valley New Year’s Eve Enforcement kickoff event, bringing together East Valley law enforcement partners for coordinated operations aimed at reducing impaired driving on one of the highest-risk nights of the year.

In line with GOHS priorities, the grants will support the following programs:

  • $5,000 for pedestrian and bicycle safety enforcement
  • $46,897 for DUI and impaired-driving enforcement
  • $44,148 for Selective Traffic Enforcement Program activities

These overall initiatives strengthen the department’s efforts to reduce crashes, enhance overall traffic safety and support the community-centered environment where all ASU community members can thrive.
