The Arizona State University guitar program in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre began a dynamic season of performances last week — one that promises to highlight international artistry, student excellence and the rich diversity of the world of guitar.
The fall season opening concert featured visionary Scottish guitarist Paul Galbraith, co-presenting with the Phoenix Guitar Society, on Sept. 23.
Next, the Fall Guitar Studio Showcase will feature the ASU Classical Guitar Studio on Sept. 30, presenting a dynamic mix of solos, small ensembles and a full guitar orchestra.
On Oct. 28, internationally acclaimed Volterra Project Trio performs an evening of dynamic chamber music, co-presenting with the Phoenix Guitar Society.
The final fall concert, “Recuerdos de España: An Exploration of Spanish Guitar Traditions,” on Nov. 18 presents a celebration of Spanish guitar traditions with performances on historic Spanish instruments recently donated to ASU by renowned collector Sheldon Urlik.
The spring season presents chamber music collaborations and signature showcases. Faculty artists Elizabeth Buck, professor of flute, and Martha Masters, assistant professor of guitar, present an evening of duets, and ASU Guitar Night unites classical, jazz and popular guitarists on one stage, highlighting the breadth of styles across ASU’s guitar program. The Spring Guitar Studio Showcase closes the season with performances from the classical guitar ensembles and the ASU Guitar Orchestra.
Together, these events offer a year that balances international prestige with the creativity of the next generation — a celebration of the instrument’s power to connect, inspire and captivate.
