Renowned French author joins Barrett students for literary dialogue in Paris

Students in Barrett, The Honors College’s Paris study abroad program were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime academic experience when renowned French author Abdellah Taïa made a surprise visit to their class for a discussion of his novel, A Country for Dying, which they had just finished reading.

As part of his class on postcolonial French literature, Associate Teaching Professor and Honors Faculty Fellow David Agruss arranged the remarkable opportunity for students. Taïa, one of the most important contemporary voices in French literature and winner of the prestigious Prix Décembre in 2024, joined students for an intimate conversation about the themes and context of his novel.

Students had not been told Taïa would be attending and were visibly stunned when he entered the classroom. After the discussion, many stayed behind to get their copies of the book signed.
