Hugh Downs School Names Tim Vasquez 2025 Alumnus of the Year

The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication has named Tim Vasquez, president of Someburros, as its 2025 Alumnus of the Year. Vasquez received the honor at the Hugh Downs School’s 2025 Awards & Recognition Ceremony, which celebrates outstanding achievements by students, faculty, and alumni each spring. The annual award recognizes alumni who embody the values of a Communication degree and reflect the principles outlined in ASU’s Charter—championing inclusion, fostering success, and contributing to the health of the community.
Vasquez, who graduated in 1998 with a degree in Communication from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, originally envisioned a career in sportscasting while pitching for ASU’s baseball team. However, life took him on a different path—one rooted in family and tradition. Returning to his family’s restaurant business, Someburros, Vasquez immersed himself in all aspects of the operation, from learning the beloved recipes of his Abuela to waving down customers in a donkey costume as part of the restaurant's early promotions.
Today, as president of Someburros, Vasquez leads with a philosophy grounded in respect, opportunity, and community. When the Hugh Downs School visited Vasquez at his Tempe location, they found a leader deeply committed to the success of his employees. He spoke passionately about promoting from within, supporting team members in their personal milestones—such as buying first cars and starting families—and creating an environment where people feel seen and valued.
“From conflict negotiation to interpersonal communication, those are all skills you use every single day—both at work and with friends and family,” Vasquez said, reflecting on the impact of his Communication degree. “I wouldn’t have majored in anything else.”
Through his leadership, Vasquez exemplifies the core tenets of ASU’s Charter, taking responsibility for the well-being of his community and fostering a culture of inclusion and support. Under his guidance, Someburros has become more than just a popular restaurant—it has grown into a place where relationships are nurtured and community thrives.
