At Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University, success is defined not only by individual achievements but also by the ability to uplift others along the way. The remarkable strength of Thunderbird’s alumni network demonstrates the profound impact one person’s generosity and dedication can have on an entire community. One such individual is Chenta Chen, a 1982 Thunderbird graduate, whose unwavering support has left a lasting legacy for current T-birds and alumni.

Chen’s story with Thunderbird is about more than just success. Not long after starting his own company, Protrade Global Limited, an international trading company specializing in petrochemical raw materials and logistics, Chen hired fellow Thunderbird alumnus Chris Bell '89, who is now the company’s chief executive officer. The two T-birds have since led Protrade to become a true global trading company.

“Chenta gave me my first opportunity after Thunderbird,” Bell reflected. “And he continues to open doors for so many others in our community. His generosity is truly remarkable.”

Protrade was later acquired by Acer Group in Taiwan, but Chen’s contributions to Thunderbird didn’t stop there. His sponsorship of the Taiwan window at the Pub at Thunderbird reflects his commitment to both Taiwanese students and the school he holds dear. Through his leadership in the Taiwan Going Global initiative, Chen helps strengthen the bridge between Thunderbird and Taiwan’s vibrant business community, particularly with Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. A key moment came when he connected Thunderbird to Stan Shih, co-founder of Acer — often called the “tech grandfather” of Taiwan — who now serves as a professor of practice at Thunderbird. Through this, Thunderbird has reached a working relationship with Taiwan’s semiconductor sector.

“Giving back to the Thunderbird community has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career,” Chen said. “I am honored to contribute to the next generation of global leaders.”

Chen’s influence reaches far beyond his philanthropic contributions. He played a pivotal role in the Taiwan alumni reunion this past July, bringing together generations of alumni to share stories, rekindle friendships, and build new connections. In March, Protrade hosted the Executive Master of Global Management (EMGM) field seminar, offering participants hands-on learning experiences that are invaluable in today’s global marketplace. This past fall, Protrade hosted a Global Challenge Lab, further strengthening Thunderbird’s presence in Taiwan.

Perhaps one of the most touching examples of Chen’s impact came earlier this year during a casual alumni meet-and-greet organized by Helen Wu, executive director of Global Partnerships and Operations at Thunderbird and University Fellow, Taiwan Initiatives. Chen connected with fellow Thunderbird alumnus Navin Gupta, who is a member of the Thunderbird Global Alumni Network (TGAN), while Gupta was visiting Taiwan from Dubai.  Gupta brought his daughter with him, who was studying in Japan and interested in interning in Taiwan. True to his generous nature, Chen made a few calls during their time together. The result? Gupta’s daughter interned at Protrade Taipei this past summer.

“My daughter’s internship at Protrade was an eye-opening experience, made possible by Chenta opening the door,” said Gupta. “His dedication to the Thunderbird community extends beyond just financial support — it’s personal, impactful, and far-reaching.”

This year, Thunderbird welcomed 57 new Taiwanese students, an impressive 91% increase year-over-year in enrollment. Chen’s efforts, along with the continued support of Thunderbird alumni, are a powerful reminder of the strength of the school’s global network.

“T-birds are not only incredibly helpful, but they’re also some of the most friendly and generous people I’ve met, always willing to give their time and support. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside Chen, and I’m constantly amazed by his drive, dedication, and how effortlessly he steps up to help the next generation. His passion for giving back inspires us all,” Wu said.

Paetra Yates, executive director of Alumni Engagement, echoes this sentiment: “Our alumni community continually shows us that their connection to Thunderbird doesn’t end at graduation. Whether it’s through mentorship, internships, or philanthropic contributions, T-birds like Chen remind us of the generosity of the Thunderbird spirit. We are so proud to see the impact they make in the lives of our students. Every alumnus has the ability to shape the future of Thunderbird through their time, talent, and passion.”
