Seungmin “Luke” Kang, a junior in Thunderbird School of Global Management's Bachelor of Global Management (BGM) program, recently received the Korean Honor Scholarship (KHS), a prestigious award given to only 64 Korean students across the United States each year. Recognized by the Korean Embassy for his academic achievements, dedication, and contributions to both his community and studies, Kang embodies the scholarship’s mission to support future leaders of the Korean and global communities.

On October 31, he was honored at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles at the Consulate General of Korea. For over 42 years, the Korean Honor Scholarship Committee has awarded 3,388 scholarships to outstanding Korean and Korean-American students, with Kang a part of this talented group.

In the following Q&A, Kang shares insights into his background, his journey at Thunderbird, and what this scholarship means for his future.

Question: Could you tell us a little about your background and where you are from?

Answer: I’m originally from Seoul, South Korea, and I’m currently a junior majoring in global management at Thunderbird. Alongside my studies, I work as a success coach within Global Launch’s English Language Program and serve as a digital marketing intern for IRT Media Group, a company based in Spain. These roles provide me with invaluable hands-on experience in global communication, leadership, and cultural adaptability, all of which I hope will further shape my career in international business.

Q: Why did you decide to enroll at Thunderbird?

A: While researching universities in the United States, I learned that Thunderbird has an outstanding reputation in the field of international business. I knew that to deeply understand management, it would be essential to study under experienced faculty members who bring both academic and practical perspectives into the classroom. The unique global network and the opportunity to engage with peers from diverse backgrounds were compelling factors that ultimately inspired me to join Thunderbird.

Q: What does being awarded the Korean Honor Scholarship mean to you?

A: This scholarship is particularly meaningful because it recognizes the commitment and passion I’ve put into my studies and extracurricular activities. Receiving this honor aligns with my own ambition to become a leader in the global community, as envisioned by the Korean Embassy. I am deeply grateful to my professors and mentors at Thunderbird, who have supported my academic journey, and I am committed to continuing my studies with renewed purpose and dedication.

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: As I approach my senior year, I’m reflecting on how best to channel my passion into a meaningful career. Initially, I was drawn to media and aspired to be a producer, fascinated by how K-Content has the power to bridge cultural divides and foster empathy. This interest has expanded to include marketing, where I see an opportunity to connect people and provide real value beyond just commercial interests. Through my coursework and electives, I’m developing a deep interest in how marketing can drive positive change and resonate with people globally.

Q: What has your experience at Thunderbird been like?

A: My experience at Thunderbird has been both enriching and transformative. Engaging in classes with peers from all over the world has allowed me to view global issues from various perspectives, fostering a real understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. The professors, each with diverse professional backgrounds and expertise, have been instrumental in helping me broaden my understanding of international business. Thunderbird has not only provided a comprehensive business education but has also allowed me to develop as a person. I am truly grateful to the entire Thunderbird community, from faculty to staff and my fellow students, who have each contributed to making this journey memorable and impactful.

Q: What advice would you give to a student just starting a program at Thunderbird?

A: My advice to new students would be to embrace every opportunity Thunderbird offers. This school provides an exceptional platform to gain both academic and practical knowledge, as well as opportunities to build a network that spans across the globe. I would encourage students to take advantage of mentoring sessions with faculty, engage actively in academic and social events, and approach each experience with an open mind and a willingness to grow. Your time at Thunderbird will be a pivotal chapter in your life, so maximize every opportunity to build your skills, broaden your perspectives, and prepare for your future as a global leader.
