New year, new swag: Alumni educators show off Sun Devil spirit at Someburros

On Monday, alumni educators kicked off the start of a new school year with fresh Sun Devil swag at Someburros in Tempe, courtesy of the Sun Devil Teacher Packs program.
For nearly a decade, the ASU Alumni Association has sent complimentary Sun Devil Teacher Packs filled with ASU swag and educational resources to K–12 alumni educators across the world, including all 50 states.
This year, the program is celebrating a new milestone.
Monday marked the first of several new opportunities for educators to pick up their Sun Devil Teacher Packs in person at select Someburros locations in the Phoenix Valley, thanks to a partnership between the ASU Alumni Association and Someburros, which is owned by ASU alum and Sun Devil 100 Class of 2023 honoree Tim Vasquez.
Someburros’ head of community relations, Amy Vasquez, also an ASU alum, said Someburros’ dedication to giving back to the local community made it an easy decision to partner with the ASU Alumni Association and host Sun Devil Teacher Packs pickups.
Participating teachers picked up their Sun Devil Teacher Packs along with complimentary Someburros tacos, bookmarks, pencils and additional goodies.
Elementary school teacher and three-time program participant Sonali Jacinto, ’24 BA in elementary education, said the option to pick up her Sun Devil Teacher Pack at Someburros’ Tempe location was “perfect” for her needs. She shared that the new option eliminated any worries about waiting for her pack to arrive through the mail.

Picking up a Sun Devil Teacher Pack?
Upcoming pickup parties will be hosted at select Someburros locations from 4–7 p.m. Attendees must have already registered for a Sun Devil Teacher Pack.
- Gilbert (Market Street) – Thursday, Aug. 6
- Gilbert (Stapley Drive) – Monday, Aug. 10
- South Chandler (Gilbert Road) – Wednesday, Aug. 12
- Peoria (Thunderbird Road) – Thursday, Aug. 13
Patricia Thiele-Keating, assistant vice president of the ASU Alumni Association and founder of the program, said Sun Devil Teacher Packs serve a multifaceted purpose.
“The program brings joy to our alumni working in the classroom,” Thiele-Keating said. “The original idea was to get more ASU maroon and gold into classrooms so the young students can learn from early on that they can have a future that includes ASU.”
Middle school math teacher Kaitlyn Sickler, ’25 BA in elementary education, said that exposure to ASU through Sun Devil classroom goodies helps her students realize that higher education is accessible to them.
“Promoting the school that I went to helps encourage our students to be like, ‘Wait, this might be something I want to do or look forward to doing in the future,'” Sickler said.
