Wrestling preparing for Sunkist Kids International Open

The Arizona State University wrestling team will be represented by 16 of its team members next weekend in the Sunkist Kids International Open and U.S. Grappling World Team Trials that will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center (south building) Friday-Sunday, October 23-25. The Open is one of the major competitions held annually and marks the start of the international competition schedule. Attracting numerous competitors from all over the nation and the world, many of the wrestlers entered into the event are expected to be contenders for positions at the 2012 London Olympics.<separator></separator>With the collegiate season a little over one month away, 14 Sun Devils (all who will represent the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club) will compete in the freestyle competition, including several starters from last year's team in <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/deberry_kyle00.html">K… DeBerry</a> (74kg), <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/varela_vicente00.html"… Varela</a> (66kg) and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/swigart_michael00.html… Swigart</a> (74kg). The Greco-Roman tournament will see three Sun Devils, including Eric Nye, who enters the 120kg competition as the third-ranked wrestler in the U.S. One Sun Devil, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/lester_kenny00.html">K… Lester</a>, will compete in the World Team Trials of grappling, entering in both the Gi and No-Gi events.<separator></separator> Along with the opening international event of the season, the World Team Trials in grappling - also known as Submission Wrestling - will be held to determine who will represent the U.S. at the FILA Grappling World Championships that will be held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., December 11-13.<separator></separator>The three day event in Phoenix opens on Friday, October 23, with the complete No-Gi grappling tournament being held. On Saturday, the Gi grappling tournament, men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle will all be held with Sunday being reserved for the largest competition, men's freestyle.
