Wrestling drops home dual to CS Bakersfield

In a dual that featured eight bonus point victories, including six by fall, the Arizona State University wrestling team came on the short end of the score as the visiting CS Bakersfield Roadrunners won 7-of-10 bouts to claim a 36-15 victory in Pac-10 action Sunday evening inside Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. The home loss of the season lowered the Sun Devils’ record to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10 while the Roadrunners improved to 4-3 with a 3-0 record in the conference.

The dual opened at 149 pounds and did not get off to a great start for the Sun Devils as the visitors won the first three bouts of the night. Calvin Miller pinned Josh Calteux in 2:36 to stake CSUB to a 6-0 lead before Trevor Hall collected an 18-3 technical fall over Te Edwards to push the score to 11-0. At 165 pounds, Joey Granata pinned Kyle DeBerry in 4:50 to give the Roadrunners their third win in a row.

But, the Sun Devils got on the board at 174 pounds with Eric Starks securing an 8-4 decision victory. The Roadrunners responded, however, with three more wins of their own, starting with Ernesto Ancona winning a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds over Jake Meredith. That was followed by a pair of pins by CSUB’s nationally ranked big-men as No. 16 Brandon Halsey pinned Jake Cranford in 4:25 before No. 7 Mitch Monteiro pinned Imanibom Etukeren in 4:57.

The home were brought to their feet at 125 pounds as No. 8 Anthony Robles won his seventh pin fall of the season, sticking Frank Lomas in 4:06. Following a CSUB win by major decision at 133 by Thomas Kimbrell over Angel Alegre (17-4), the dual was capped with another fall as No. 5 Chris Drouin stuck Anthony Box in a cradle and pinned him in 5:30 to bring the final score to 36-15.

The Sun Devils will take some time off before returning to their home mats on Sunday, January 18, when No. 11 Oklahoma comes to Tempe for a non-conference dual inside Wells Fargo Arena.
