Women's tennis shoots down Oregon
Eugene, Ore. -- The 19th ranked Sun Devil Women's Tennis team put up a strong singles showing on Saturday to defeat the No. 45 Oregon Ducks 5-2. Although losing the doubles point, the team won five of six singles matches, ultimately giving them the winning edge over Oregon.
It was a rough start for the Devils, who dropped the doubles point early on. Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna lost their first doubles match of the season against Pavlina Smatova and Ana Cecilia Olivos 8-5. Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons battled it out against Carmen Seremeta and Trudie du Toit, but ultimately faced a tough loss, falling 9-8. The bright spot of the doubles match ups saw sisters Laila Abdala and Nadia Abdala crush Claudia Hirt and Stephanie Macfarlane 8-6.
The Devils rallied back in singles action, which saw No. 3 Kelcy McKenna roll by Carmen Seremeta 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot, followed up by Laila Abdala, in the No. 3 position, who shut out Ana Cecilia Olivos in the first set 6-0 and followed it up 6-2 for the win. Nadia Abdala held her own against Pavlina Smatova and triumphed 6-2, 6-3. Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons rounded out the Sun Devil victories, each winning their respective matches.
The Devils return home next week to take on the Washington schools, starting with the Washington Huskies on Friday, March 6 at 1:30 p.m. MT. They return to action on Saturday, March 7 to take on the Cougars of Washington State at 12:00 p.m. MT. Both games will take place at ASU's Whiteman Tennis Center.
