Women's tennis opens fall tournament season at Cal Nike Invitational


Opening their 26th season under the direction of Head Coach Sheila McInerney, the Sun Devil Women's Tennis team will face off against some of the nation's best at the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley this weekend.

The Devils enter a highly competitive field that includes three top 25 teams: fourth ranked California, reigning Pac-10 Champions No. 9 USC and No. 12 UCLA. The ASU squad boasts two returning All Americans: No. 7 Kelcy McKenna (S, D) and No. 68 Micaela Hein (D). Last year the duo dominated competition at the tournament. McKenna prevailed with the ITA Singles Gold crown as well as the ITA Doubles Gold title with teammate Hein.

"The girls are really excited to get going and the Cal-Nike Inivtational is always a great test as there will be a number of players with preseason rankings competing," Head Coach Sheila McInerney said. "After a month of conditioning and weight workouts the team is looking forward to playing some competitive tennis matches. I feel everyone is hitting the ball well so now is the time to translate that into match play. It should be a great test for us."

Play begins on Friday, October 2 and continues through the weekend The tournament will consist of three flights of both singles and doubles. Matches will be played at either the Hellman Tennis Complex or the Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley, Calif.
