Women's tennis falls to Texas in Austin


The Arizona State women’s tennis team (6-2) fell to the University of Texas, 4-3 in Austin on Sunday. ASU automatically lost a point to the Long Horns after the Sun Devils had to default the sixth spot in singles play and the third spot in doubles play.

Freshman Jacqueline Cako defeated No. 18 Aeriel Ellis, 6-1, 6-4. Ranked 44th in the nation in singles play, Cako extended her match-winning streak to 11. Senior Micaela Hein also won her match 7-5, 6-3 over Texas’ Krista Damico. Sophomore Hannah James defeated Maggie Mello, 6-4, 6-4.

Texas won the doubles point with Arizona State having to default on the final match. Brown/Simmons defeated the UT pair of Damico/Ellis, 8-4.

Next up, the Arizona State women’s tennis team hosts Pac-10 opponent Washington State on Friday, Mar. 4 at the ASU Whiteman Tennis Center.
