Women's tennis advances to Pac-10 quarterfinals

The Arizona State Women's Tennis Team put forth a phenomenal effort in Day One of the Pac-10 Championships Thursday in Ojai, where they advanced five Sun Devils to the quarterfinal brackets by the end of the day with Nadia Abdala leading the way in the women's Championship Bracket.

In the round of 32, the Sun Devils came out blazing as Kelcy McKenna and Nadia Abdala both took straight set wins in the Championship Bracket to advance them to the round of 16.

Their five fellow Devils in the Invitational Bracket followed suit as well with Jessica Leitch, Micaela Hein, Ashlee Brown, Wendy Pilecka and Lauren Megale all took wins in the first round to gain entrance to the round of 16.

In the Championship Bracket, Kelcy McKenna was matched up with Cal's Claire Ilcinkas, which saw the Golden Bear rally up to defeat McKenna in a gritty three set match with Kelcy taking the first set before Ilcinkas fired back to take the second and third 6-4 apiece. Nadia Abdala wasn't phased at all with her opponent though as she handled Washington State's Kate Kamendova with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win to wrap the day.

In the Invitationals Bracket, ASU was lights out as Micaela Hein, Ashlee Brown and Wendy Pilecka all won in straight sets in the round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals. Lauren Megale had some trouble against Cal's Daron Moore, but took the Bear to three sets and a tie-break to win it and advance with her teammates. The wins for Pilecka and Brown also set-up a match-up between the two slated for tomorrow morning.

The 108th annual Pac-10 Tournament rolls on tomorrow as singles play resumes at 11:00 a.m. after the conclusion of the 10:00 a.m. doubles start time.
