Women's soccer hosts Sun Devil Desert Classic
Following a two-game road trip to the Carolinas, the Arizona State women's soccer team returns home this weekend to host the Sun Devil Desert Classic at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Sun Devils will host the University of Tennessee on Friday at 7 p.m. and the University of Nebraska on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Also in action at the Sun Devil Desert Classic will be the University of Arizona. The Wildcats will be in the first game of each doubleheader as they will face Nebraska on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Tennessee on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Still unbeaten (3-0-1) following their 1-0 win at Charlotte and 1-1 tie at 19th-ranked South Carolina last weekend, the Sun Devils entered the national rankings for the first time this season as they were tabbed 24th in the Soccer America women's soccer poll and 25th in the NSCAA's national rankings.
Both of ASU's games this weekend will be rematches of games played on the road last season. The Sun Devils defeated Tennessee (2-2 record in 2010) last season in a dramatic 3-2 double overtime victory in Knoxville, Tenn., in which current Sun Devil senior forward Karin Volpe scored the tying goal with 13 seconds left in regulation and then won the game 6:49 into the second overtime. Less than a month later ASU tied Nebraska (4-1 record in 2010) 1-1 in Lincoln, Neb. The first goal of current sophomore midfielder Taylor McCarter's career came in the 76th minute to tie the game after Nebraska took the lead with a goal that came with just 16 seconds left in the first half.
