Women's hoops heads to Oregon

<a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/asu/sports/w-bas…; target="_blank">Complete release in PDF format</a><separator></separator>Up next The Arizona State women's basketball team makes its penultimate road trip of the regular season this week when it travels northwest to Oregon to take on the Oregon State Beavers on Thursday (7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT) and the Oregon Ducks on Saturday (2 p.m. PT/3 p.m. MT).<separator></separator>The Sun Devils are coming off a weekend in which they split a pair of down-to-the-wire contests at home. In the first of the two games ASU came from behind in the final minute to force overtime against Washington before pulling out an eventual 67-61 win. The Sun Devils would not be as fortunate last Saturday against Washington State as they were upset 66-62. After trailing by seven points on two occasions in the last three minutes, the Sun Devils would rally and got within two points, however were unable to get any closer.<separator></separator><a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/murphy_kayli01.html">K… Murphy</a> had a tremendous weekend for the Sun Devils as she accounted for double-doubles in both contests (third and fourth of her career). The senior from Mesa, Ariz., averaged 15.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists in the two games, while connecting on 91 percent of her shot attempts.<separator></separator>ASU (14-8, 6-5 Pac-10) enters this week's play tied with California (12-10, 6-5) for fourth place in the conference standings. Both teams trail third-place USC (13-9, 7-4 Pac-10) by a single game and second-place UCLA (15-7, 8-3 Pac-10) by two games. This weekend the Sun Devils will be hoping to duplicate the success they had against the Beavers (9-12, 1-9 Pac-10) and Ducks (14-8, 5-5- Pac-10) during the first round of Pac-10 play. Against Oregon, senior guard <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/orsillo_danielle00.htm… Orsillo</a> (16 points, 7-11 FGs), junior forward <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/tobin_becca00.html">Be… Tobin</a> (12 points, 5-6 FGs) and Murphy (11 points, 11-12 FTs) all scored in double figures as ASU shot 57 percent for the game in a 73-68 win. Two days later against the Beavers, Orsillo came within a point of matching her single-game career high as she scored 20 points (7-14 FGs, 6-6 FTs) in the Sun Devils' 56-47 win. Also adding important contributions on the offensive end were junior guard <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/watson_tenaya00.html">… Watson</a> (12 points, 4-6 FGs) and sophomore guard <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/earl_alex00.html">Alex Earl</a> (11 points, 4-5 FGs). Although they didn't score against the Beavers, two Sun Devils who also played important roles in the win were Tobin (6 blocks, 8 rebounds), who came within one block of tying ASU's single-game school record, and sophomore guard <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/brandon_kimberly00.htm… Brandon</a> (6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), who consistently disrupted the Oregon State attack on the defensive end.<separator></separator>Radio Both of this week's games can be heard live on The Fan AM 1060. Also missing for the 2009-10 season because of injury is junior guard <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/patterson_markisha00.h… Patterson</a>, who transferred to ASU from Central Arizona where she was a teammate of guard <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/watson_tenaya00.html">… Watson</a>, who also transferred to ASU.<separator></separator>• ASU has won 78 percent (65-18) of its Pac-10 contests since the 2005-06 season.<separator></separator>• This weekend the Sun Devils will be on the road where they are 26-6 (.813) in Pac-10 road games since the 2005-06 season.<separator></separator>• Arizona State holds a 30-19 lead in the all-time series with Oregon State. The Sun Devils have won 16 of the last 17 meetings between the two schools, including the last 14 in succession. The Beavers have won 10 of the 13 games contested in Corvallis.<separator></separator>• The Sun Devils and Beavers are two of the top teams in the Pac-10 in rebounding defense as they are tied for first in the conference, allowing 31.6 rebounds per game. The Beavers and Sun Devils rank 12th (+8.4) and 17th (+7.4) in the nation, respectively, in rebounding margin.<separator></separator>• ASU has outrebounded its opponent 16 times in 22 games this season. The Sun Devils have outrebounded 4 of their last 5 opponents by double digits (at Arizona +12, at California +13, vs. Washington +10, vs. Washington State +10). In addition, the Sun Devils have 33 more offensive rebounds than the opposition in their last 5 games.<separator></separator>• Senior <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/murphy_kayli01.html">K… Murphy</a> has connected on 65 percent of her field goal attempts (15-23) over ASU's last five games. She is also leading the team in rebounding (7.3 rpg) during that span.<separator></separator>• This weekend's games will be a homecoming for Sun Devil sophomore guard <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/earl_alex00.html">Alex Earl</a> (Beaverton, Ore.), who helped her high school (Southridge) to a 105-10 record and four state titles prior to coming to ASU.<separator></separator>Sun Devils look to remain among the best Over the last several years ASU has developed into one of the most successful programs not only in the Pac-10, but around the country as well. Since 2000, the Sun Devils have finished first or second in the Pac-10 a combined six times, and have finished lower than third only once. Nationally, ASU is one of 20 schools whose current streak of NCAA appearances is 5 or more, one of 15 schools that has qualified for the Sweet 16 three or more times in the last five seasons and one of 9 schools that has qualified for the Elite Eight at least two times in the last three years.<separator></separator>Devils bring the 'D' If there is one thing ASU head coach <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/turnerthorne_charli00… Turner Thorne's</a> teams have become known for over the years it is defense. The Sun Devils offered another reminder of their excellence in defending in their 73-68 win over Oregon on Jan. 14. In that contest the Sun Devils held the Ducks' high-powered offense, which came into the game leading the nation in scoring (87.0 ppg), 19 points below its average. Earlier this season the Sun Devils set season bests points for allowed (37) and blocks (9) in their 74-37 win over Furman on Dec. 28.<separator></separator>Last season six of ASU's nine Pac-10 opponents either scored their fewest points of the season against ASU or tied their lowest point total of the season. In Pac-10 play the Sun Devils led the league allowing only 53.0 points per game. In the last two years the Sun Devils have set single-game Pac-10 records for the fewest points ever allowed by a Pac-10 team (75-23 win over UC Irvine on Dec. 6, 2008) and the fewest points allowed in a Pac-10 game (59-30 win over Washington State on Feb. 21, 2008).<separator></separator>The Sun Devils enter Thursday's game tied for first in the Pac-10 in rebounding defense (31.6 rpg) and 2nd in blocks (4.4 bpg).<separator></separator>Since the 2005-06 season the Sun Devils have held the opposition to 50 or fewer points 35 times, including four times this season.<separator></separator><a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/turnerthorne_charli00… Turner Thorne</a> wins her 300th In addition to giving ASU its first Pac-10 win of the season, ASU's 64-59 win over Washington State on Jan. 9 also represented the 300th career win for Sun Devil head coach <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/turnerthorne_charli00… Turner Thorne</a>. Now in her 14th season at ASU, Turner Thorne has collected the majority of her 305 wins in Tempe, where she is 265-162. Prior to arriving at ASU, Turner Thorne was 40-40 in three seasons at Northern Arizona.<separator></separator>While 300 wins is impressive on its own merit, a closer look at Turner Thorne's coaching career makes her success look even more remarkable. At NAU, she took over a program that had posted only one winning season in 19 years. She would go on to become the first coach in program history to lead the Lumberjacks to back-to-back winning seasons.<separator></separator>In 1996 Turner Thorne accepted the top position at ASU where she took on the challenge of coaching a squad that had not won more than eight games in three years. Fast forward to the present day and Turner Thorne is the winningest coach in ASU women's basketball history. Along the way she has led the Sun Devils to seven NCAA Tournament appearances (all in the last nine years), including the only two Elite Eight appearances in school history (both coming in the last three years).<separator></separator>Always feeling at home Since 2004 the Sun Devils have won 85.1 percent (74-13) of the games they have played at Wells Fargo Arena. In addition, under Turner Thorne ASU has also proven to be nearly as effective when it is playing away from home. Since the 2006-07 season the Sun Devils have won nearly 70 percent of their games when they were the visiting team or made a trip to a neutral site.<separator></separator>Adrianne Thomas signs with ASU<a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/turnerthorne_charli00… />Charli Turner Thorne</a> announced on November 11 that Adrianne Thomas signed a national letter of intent to study and play basketball at Arizona State. "I could not be more excited about the addition of Adrianne Thomas," Turner Thorne said. "She is a powerful, explosive scoring combo guard who will fit in perfectly with our up-tempo offense and aggressive pressuring defense. "Adrianne is an extremely tough and smart competitor who has had outstanding coaching through her high school and club programs. I predict she will adapt to the college game very quickly. Besides being one of the top guards in the country, Adrianne comes from an amazing family who has instilled in her great core values including impeccable character and strong leadership. She will be a great Sun Devil."<separator></separator>A 5-9 guard, Thomas will be coming to ASU from Summit High School in Fontana, Calif., where she has earned Sunkist League MVP honors three times. In 2009 Thomas, who has scored in double figures 32 times the last two seasons, earned All-Sunkist League First-Team and All-CIF Southern Section First-Team recognition after leading her team to the state semifinals.<separator></separator>As a sophomore in 2008, Thomas helped Summit to its first CIF sectional championship game and the state quarterfinals. With her FBC club team she was named to the All-Tournament Teams of the adidas Womanhood National Championships, Summertime Invitational and adidas Super 64.<separator></separator>"Adrianne is a superstar on the court, off the court, in the classroom and in the community," said Summit girls basketball coach Alexis Barile. "On the court she's the type of player that won't allow our team to lose. In crunch situations she's the one that pulls us together and makes sure we win. She has a refuse-to-lose mentally.
