Women's golf surges into first at the Derby


The Arizona State women's golf team took over the lead at The Derby Invitational, held at the par 72 6,301-yard Auburn University Golf Club. The Sun Devils jumped ahead four spots, shooting an 8-over 584 (300-284). The Sun Devils are currently three strokes ahead of second place Virginia.

"The girls said they were going to get hot today," said seventh year head coach Melissa Luellen. "The course played tougher and so did the Sun Devils."

Anna Nordqvist continued her dominance as she burst into the lead after shooting a 5-under 67 in the second round, tying her all-time low round. The junior All-American has carded a 7-under 137 (70-67).

Senior Azahara Munoz also had a solid second round. The reigning NCAA champion moved up to third after shooting a 2-under 70 in the second round. Munoz has carded a 2-under 142 (72-70) over the two days.

Jennifer Osborn is currently tied for 15th. The senior shot a 1-over 73 in the second round to card a 7-over 151 (78-73) over the two rounds. Juliana Murcia is currently tied for 26th at 10-over 154 (80-74) while Liisa Kelo is tied for 83rd at 23-over 167 (82-85).

"The goal is to end the fall season like we started... with a win!" said Luellen on the team's goal for tomorrow.

The Derby, and the Sun Devils fall season, will conclude tomorrow.
