Williams breaks another record to pace ASU track & field

Williams and the throwers were competing at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas, while the mid-distance and distance runners opened their indoor season at the Husky Classic in Seattle.<separator></separator>At the TAMU meet, Williams had another record day on the track while <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/stevens_sarah00.html">S… Stevens</a> and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/whiting_ryan00.html">Ry… Whiting</a> were impressive in the field to lead the way for the Sun Devils. Williams, who last week broke the school record in the 60m dash, broke another mark this week as she took down the 200m dash with a time of 23.49 to finish fourth overall in the race. The previous record was 23.50 set in 1991 by Maicel Malone. Williams’ time, along with her 7.40 run in the finals of the 60m dash (finished sixth), were both provisional qualifying times for the national meet.<separator></separator>Stevens, who entered the weekend as the national leader in the weight throw and took over the lead in the shot put last night, won the weight throw again this week as she threw past the 70-foot barrier again with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 21.45m (70-04.50). Back in the shot put ring, Whiting made his season debut and moved into second on the national lists as he won with a toss of 19.71m (64-08.00) while <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/lewis_jason00.html">Jas… Lewis</a> took second with a provisional-qualifying toss of 18.25m (59-10.50). Whiting and Stevens’ marks also set facility records.<separator></separator>In Seattle, the distance and mid-distance athletes made their season debuts with several impressive marks recorded. In the men’s 800m run, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/mchenry_mason00.html">M… McHenry</a> made his Sun Devil debut by running a time of 1:49.71 and moving into second on the ASU all-time list. McHenry’s time, which provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships, was just ahead of teammate <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/barbosa_nectaly00.html"… Barbosa</a>, who ran 1:49.74. Barbosa, a 2008 All-American outdoors in the event, moved into third on the all-time ASU list with his mark.<separator></separator>The Sun Devils also had a pair of women’s distance runners achieve provisional qualifying status in 5,000m run as both <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/kingma_jenna00.html">Je… Kingma</a> and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/kielty_ali00.html">Ali Kielty</a> added their names to the national list.
