Water polo's Haas named MPSF Newcomer of the Week

Shannon Haas, a freshman center on the women's water polo team, has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Mikasa Newcomer of the Week, the league announced this week. Haas scored at least once in each of the four games this past weekend and finished the ASU Invitational with eight goals, helping the Sun Devils to three wins.

She began the ASU Invitational with four goals in a 14-13 win over Cal Baptist and scored once in the following game against No. 5 Hawai'i. Haas added a pair of goals in a 19-7 victory vs. Concordia and finished the weekend with a goal against Santa Clara on Sunday.

The Murrieta, Calif., native is second on the team in goals with 36, and is the team leader among freshman in goals, points and steals. Haas is already fourth in school history in goals scored by a freshman, and with three regular season matches left, she only needs four more scores to rank second. Her 36 goals are second most amongst MPSF freshmen and she is second on the team with 10 multiple goal games this season, including four in which she has found the back of the net three or more times.

The honor for Haas is the first of her career and the first accolade awarded to the Sun Devils this season.

The Sun Devils play their fifth MSPF Conference game at 12:00 p.m. (PST) April 3 against No. 3 California at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe.
