Water polo takes sixth place at UC Irvine Invitational

The eighth-ranked water polo team earned sixth place at the UC Irvine Invitational after falling to No. 6 Hawai'i 9-7 Feb. 28 in Irvine, Calif. The Sun Devils split the four games over the weekend and are now 6-5 overall and 0-0 in the MPSF.

ASU netted three goals in the first frame and held a one-goal lead. The Rainbow Wahine answered with three goals of their own in the following quarter and led by one at halftime. After allowing three goals in the third stanza, the Sun Devils scored twice in the final frame, but could not pull off the upset.

With a pair of goals against Hawai'i, sophomore attacker Annabelle Carter finished the invitational with a team-high nine goals. She joined junior attacker Lynlee Smith, who was second on the team with seven goals, as the only two Sun Devils to find the back of the net in each of the four games in Irvine. Freshman center Shannon Haas added a goal and finished the tournament with five, and senior attacker Bonnie Miles recorded her second multiple-goal game of the season.

The Sun Devils head out west again March 6-7 for the Cal Lutheran Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
