Water polo takes loss in final match of 2010


The ninth-ranked women's water polo team was defeated 10-9 by No. 6 San Jose State in the seventh-place game of the MPSF Championships May 2 in Los Angeles. The Sun Devils (16-15, 0-7) held an 8-6 lead at intermission, but were outscored by three goals in the second half.

Senior center Kelly Phelps found the back of the net three minutes into the first quarter with ASU trailing, 2-0. Following a trio of Spartan goals, junior attacker Sarah Harris and senior attacker Bonnie Miles recorded back-to-back exclusion goals to bring the first quarter total to, 5-3.

ASU cut the deficit to one after sophomore attacker Mariam Salloum opened the second frame with a score. Senior attacker Kari Walsh netted ASU's fourth-straight goal less than a minute later to knot the match at five goals apiece. The Sun Devils and SJSU traded scores before ASU took its first lead of the day on Salloum's second goal of the match. Sophomore attacker Kelsey White added a score to give ASU an 8-6 halftime lead.

The Spartans brought the score to within one goal, but junior attacker Lynlee Smith fired her second goal of the game in the third frame to push the Devils' lead back to a pair.

With the match tied at 9-9 going into the final quarter of play, SJSU broke the stalemate at the 7:21 mark and held onto the lead for a one-goal victory.

Sophomore goalie Dana Harvey collected five saves in the first half and freshman Amanda Young picked up four in the second half.
