Water polo says goodbye to seniors with victory


The ninth-ranked women's water polo team defeated No. 15 Indiana 18-8 April 18 on senior day at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. On a day honoring center Kelly Phelps and attackers Kari Walsh and Bonnie Miles, Phelps led the charge for the Sun Devils (16-12, 0-7 MPSF) with four goals.

ASU jumped out to a three-goal lead through the first quarter after goals by Walsh, Phelps and junior attacker Candice Phillippe. In the second stanza, sophomore attacker Kelsey White recorded a hat trick, while junior attacker Sarah Harris found the back of the net twice and junior center Nikki Unbehaun scored once.

Holding onto a 9-3 halftime lead, Harris netted a goal just 26 seconds into the third frame to push the Sun Devils lead to seven. Phelps scored her second goal of the game with three minutes left in the quarter and sophomore attacker Annabelle Carter gathered a pair of scores to put ASU ahead, 13-6.

Phelps collected her third and fourth goals in the final frame, and freshman center Shannon Haas scored her 45th goal of the season. Miles added a score at the 2:21 mark and Walsh found the back of the net with just 15 seconds to play to make the final score, 18-8.


Sophomore goalie Dana Harvey made 10 saves in four quarters of play.

The Sun Devils head to Los Angeles for the MPSF Championships April 30 to May 2 at UCLA.
