Water polo completes weekend unbeaten
The No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team completed a perfect opening weekend with a 15-7 victory over Bucknell on Sunday at the Michigan Invitational. The Sun Devils improve to 3-0 with the win, the second-best start in the program's eight-year history, behind only a 4-0 start in 2006.
Senior Addison McGrath scored four goals in the victory, giving her 13 over the three games of the tournament. Sophomore Nikki Unbehaun
added three goals for her second career hat trick.
Sophomores Lynlee Smith and Sam Schubert scored two goals apiece in the game, as both of them have now scored in each of their first three collegiate games. Juniors Bonnie Miles and Kelly Phelps and freshmen Mariam Salloum and Kelsey White all had a goal each. It was White's first career goal.
As they did in their first game yesterday against Colorado State, the Sun Devils jumped ahead early and never looked back. They led 6-3 after the first quarter and built the lead to five by the half. They extended the lead to 14-6 after three before going on to the 15-7 win.
ASU will return to action next weekend, facing three Top 20 foes in two one-day tournaments in California. The Sun Devils will play at the Cal Baptist Mini-Tournament in Riverside, Calif., on Saturday, and they will face No. 18 CS Bakersfield at 11:30 a.m. PT and No. 14 CS Northridge at 3:30 p.m. The Devils will then head to Irvine, Calif., on Sunday for the UC Irvine Mini-Tournament, where they will match up with No. 12 Hartwick at 9 a.m. PT.
