September 22, 2010

Women's soccer Karin Volpe has been named ASU's Athlete of the Week ending September 19th. Volpe had a terrific weekend 9/10/10- 9/12/10 during the Sun Devil Desert Classic where she was named Most Valuable Player. During this two-win weekend for the No.19 ASU, she contributed four goals including her first career hat trick. The Brentwood California native finished off a four-goal second-half scoring flurry for the Sun Devils which came in the span of 12:04 with her goal coming in the 84th minute to put ASU up 4-1 in an eventual, 4-2 victory over the Lady Vols.

Her career game occurred in a 5-0 sweep against Nebraska on Sunday. She set the tone early penetrating her first goal in the ninth minute to give the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead. She scored two more times in the second half, one off a rebound in the 65th minute and the other in the 69th minute on a breakaway. This gave Volpe her first hat trick, which also tied the school record for most goals scored in a game.

Volpe also leads the Sun Devils with 15 points, seven goals and three game-winning goals on the season. This also ranks her seventh in ASU program history with a total of 61 career points. The Sun Devils will head to Long Beach State on the 24th of September where they face the 49ers.
