Volleyball wins second tournament, sweeps Cal State Northridge
Margie Giordano’s 15 kills coupled with Sarah Reaves’ 12 powered the ASU Volleyball team to their fifth sweep of an opponent this season as the Sun Devils took a 25-16, 25-22 and 25-20 win over the Cal State Northridge Matadors Saturday afternoon. The win seals the tournament crown for the Sun Devils, their second in three weeks as their record now holds at 8-2 overall.
Sarah Reaves came out to light up the first set, burying six kills, while the Devil D did the dirty work, collecting 5.5 blocks to shut down the Matadors and take the first set in a definitive 25-16 win. Set two the ASU offense stepped it up a notch with a .370 attack average as Reaves matched her six kills again with ASU taking a 25-22 win into the break.
The Sun Devils didn’t back off in the third set though as Margie Giordano was unstoppable in the set laying claim to nine of ASU’s 12 digs as the Sun Devils finished the sweep for their eighth win of the season with a 25-20 win in set three. With their outstanding performances this weekend, Sarah Reaves and Margie Giordano were elected to their third consecutive all-tournament team this weekend.
Coach Watson surmised his squad’s performance this weekend, stating, “It was a good weekend for us, we showed maturity when faced with some adversity. We’re beginning to see a nice return on the things we’ve been working on in practice.”
The 8-2 start is the best start for a Sun Devil Volleyball squad since 2002 under former Head Coach Patti Snyder-Park.
The win wraps the ASU Sheraton Invitational and ASU’s home tournament schedule. The Sun Devils will hit the road again next week as they head to Ann Arbor, Michigan to compete in the Adidas Michigan Invitational.
