Volleyball collects fifth sweep of the season over Washington State


The Sun Devil Volleyball team collected their fifth 3-0 sweep of the season Saturday afternoon as they topped Washington State 25-10, 25-14 and 25-18. The Sun Devils are now 10-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play as the WSU Cougars fall to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in the Pac.

Set one saw the Sun Devils take control, hitting .303 with Margie Giordano five kills leading ASU as Marina Mercer collected 12 assists and two block assists as the Sun Devils took a 25-10. A .321 attack percentage blasted the ASU past WSU in set two as they Devil D held WSU to a -.029 attack percentage en route to a 25-14 win to head 2-0 into the break.

The assault didn’t relent in the third set as well with Margie Giordano leading the attack again with a lights-out .375 attack percentage and four kills to seal the deal with a 25-18 win in set three and ensure that WSU took the lead only once in the entire match and tied the score only three times.

“Today’s performance speaks volumes of the foundation we are building for this team and this program, and this weekend’s performance has only shown us that we capable of being competitive with any team at any level” stated Jason Watson to surmise the Sun Devils weekend.

The Sun Devils are now 10-5 and 1-1 headed into part one of the 2008 ‘Duel In the Desert’ as ASU will head to Tucson on Wednesday to take on in-state foe Arizona at 7 p.m. in the McKale Center.
