Volleyball blasts by No. 16 Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. - Margie Giordano and Sarah Reaves both had 18 kills Friday night coupled with Marina Mercer's 53 assists as the Sun Devil Volleyball team upset the #16 Oregon Ducks to complete the weekend sweep topping Oregon 3-1. The Sun Devils won 30-23, 30-28, 22-30 and 30-24 en route to their current 13-11 overall record and 5-6 Pac-10 record. The Ducks fall to 16-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play as well.
Game one was saw the Sun Devils take the lead and never look back as it was all Sarah Reaves who came back from injury for the game to grab six kills in the first game for a .364 attack percentage. The Ducks were no easy match though as Gorana Maricic compiled eight of Oregon's 15 kills in the game. The effort by the Ducks wasn't enough though as ASU took game one 30-23.
Game two the Ducks battled back hard with nine tie scores and four lead changes as both teams fought back and forth for the win, with Margie Giordano helping the Devils to just edge the Ducks with her seven kills en route to their 30-28 win.
The ranked Ducks didn't go quietly though as they came out in game three to hit .341 as a team with Gorana Maricic and Heather Meyers both grabbing six kills as they topped ASU 30-22 to force a fourth game.
The Sun Devils made sure there was no need for a fifth game though hitting .260 as a team, backed by Sarah Reaves with her seven kills for a .353 average as Marina Mercer quarterbacked the offense with 14 assists to shut the door on the Ducks and give ASU the match with a 30-24 win.
The Sun Devils return to their home court next weekend as they set to face the Washington State Cougars and #4 Washington Huskies on Thursday, November 1 and Friday, November 2. Both games will be held at 7 p.m. at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena.
