Two Gym Devils travel to regional


<p><strong>2011 Regionals&nbsp;<br /></strong>The Arizona State Women's gymnastics team sends two Gym Devils, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-gym/mtt/jones_beate00.html">Beaté Jones</a> (AA) and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-gym/mtt/snowden_madison00.html">M… Snowden</a> (Floor), to Regionals hosted by the University of Oklahoma. Currently Arizona State's longest tenured coach, Spini has had at least one Sun Devil qualify for the NCAA Championships 25 out of the last 29 seasons. Last season <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-gym/mtt/atkinson_mary00.html">Mary Atkinson</a> finished ninth in the vault at NCAA's to earn All-American honors. This season, Spini welcomes Mike Lorenzen to the Sun Devil staff as ASU gymnastics new associate head coach. Lorenzen, who spent the previous season with Stanford, joins Spini and assistant coach <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-gym/mtt/ward_kari00.html">Kari Ward</a>.</p><separator></separator><!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE --><p><strong>Beaté Jones<br /></strong><a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-gym/mtt/jones_beate00.html">Beaté Jones</a> qualified for regionals as an all-around competitor. Jones competed in the all-around in eight of eleven meets this season. Her top two all-around scores this season were 39.225 and 39.050. Her solid scores on every event led the Gym Devils to count on her consistency through the season. Jones' season-high scores this season were a 9.900 on vault, a 9.825 on bars, 9.800 on beam, and a 9.850 on floor.</p><separator></separator><p><strong>Madison Snowden</strong><strong> <br /></strong>Junior <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-gym/mtt/snowden_madison00.html">M… Snowden</a> qualified as an event specialist and will compete on the floor exercise as an individual. Snowden has been a tremendous contributor for the Sun Devils on the floor exercise&nbsp;performing on the event in every meet of the season. She scored a 9.900 and above four times, tallying a 9.925 as her season-high.</p><separator></separator><p><strong>Nationals Outlook<br /></strong>The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Cleveland, Ohio, April 15-17, hosted by Kent State University and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.</p><separator></separator><p>In addition, the event winners at each regional will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.</p><separator></separator><p><strong>New Coaching Addition <br /></strong>On Oct. 1, head coach <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-gym/mtt/spini_john00.html">John Spini</a> announced the hire of associate head coach Mike Lorenzen to the Sun Devil staff. Lorenzen arrived at Arizona State after spending five years as an assistant coach at Stanford University. During his time at Stanford, the team had a successful post-season run, including four NCAA Championship appearances. Prior to Stanford, Lorenzen was the head gymnastics coach at the University of Iowa. Under Lorenzen, the Hawkeyes qualified for the program's first NCAA Championship appearance, had five gymnasts named NCAA All-Americans and was a two-time recipient of the Big Ten Coach of the Year.
