Twenty with ties to ASU to compete at USA Track & Field Meet

Twenty individuals with ties to the Arizona State University track and field program have made their way to Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, where they will compete in the 2010 USA Track & Field Championships June 24-27. The ASU contingent is comprised of 10 men and 10 women with four men and four women having been on the Sun Devil roster this past season.

Several of the entrants are ranked highly in their respective events with one man and one women leading the way. For the men, 2004 Olympic champion and multiple-time U.S. champion Dwight Phillips has the top qualifying mark in the long jump (8.42m) while former American record holder Lisa Aguilera (9:33.11). Others in the Top 3 include Fasil Bizuneh, who is second in the men’s 10,000m run (28:00.22); Ryan Whiting, who is third in the men’s shot put (21.97m); Charonda Williams, who is third in the women’s 200m dash (22.55); Desiree Davila, who is third in the women’s 10,000m run (32:06.85); Sarah Stevens, who is third in the women’s shot put (18.23m); and Keia Pinnick, who is third in the women’s junior 400m hurdles (58.03).

The Sun Devils will have multiple entries in several events, including three on the men’s side and three on the women’s side. For the men, Donald Sanford (8th, 45.21) and Jimmie Gordon (21st, 46.15) are both in the 400m dash; Kyle Alcorn (5th, 8:27.95) and Aaron Aguayo (14th, 8:42.01) in the steeplechase; and Phillips and Trevell Quinley (6th, 8.13m) in the long jump. On the women’s side, Davila and Amy Hastings (4th, 32:18.72) will compete in the 10,000m run; Latosha Wallace (9th, 55.96) and Jasmine Chaney (10th, 57.67) in the 400m hurdles; and Stevens and Anna Jelmini (6th, 17.63m) in the shot put.

Chaney, as she did all season, will be busy once again this week as she is set to compete in the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles. Jelmini, who redshirted this year for ASU, will compete in the shot put and the discus and ranks among the best in the nation as she is sixth in the shot put and fifth in the discus (60.80m).

Both ESPN and NBC also will be providing live coverage starting on Friday with ESPN airing coverage from 5-7 pm (Arizona time) before returning on Saturday from 10-11:30 am (Arizona time). NBC will follow on Saturday from noon to 1 pm (Arizona time) before both networks duplicate their time slots once again on Sunday.
