Track & field nabs victories, leads in shot put


<p><a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/whiting_ryan00.html">Ry… Whiting</a> extended his national lead in the shot put, rookie <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/nettey_christabel00.htm… Nettey</a> moved into the Top 20 nationally in the long jump and members of the Arizona State University track and field team combined to win nine total events on the day as the Sun Devils competed in both the NAU Team Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz., and the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday. Along with the nine victories, the Sun Devils posted two NCAA automatic-qualifying marks, five provisional qualifiers and eight marks that rank among the Top 10 all-time in program history.</p><separator></separator><p>At the New Mexico Classic, three men’s throwers had another solid outing led by Whiting’s winning shot put mark of 21.24m (69-08.25) to extend his national lead to over five feet. Whiting was joined in the event by <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/lewis_jason00.html">Jas… Lewis</a>, who provisionally qualified for the national meet with a third-place finish at 18.69m (61-04.00), and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/clarke_jordan00.html">J… Clarke</a>, who placed fifth overall with a toss of 17.26m (56-07.50). Lewis also competed in the weight throw and won that event with another 70-foot-plus throw as he registered a mark of 21.59m (70-10.00) to automatically qualify for nationals for the second week in a row.</p><separator></separator><p>In Flagstaff at the NAU Invitational, Nettey, a true freshman, won the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.20m (20-04.25) to provisionally qualify for the national meet and rank 18th on the current descending order list. Her mark also ranks as the ninth-best all-time in Sun Devil history. Nettey also competed in the 60m hurdles, winning the preliminary round before taking second with a time of 8.49 (converted for altitude), the fourth-best mark in program history.</p><separator></separator><p>Nettey’s win was one of five for the women that also included two sprint events, one mid-distance race and one field event victory. On the track, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/chaney_jasmine00.html">… Chaney</a> also had a strong showing on the day as she blazed a time of 53.89 to win the 400m dash and provisionally qualify for nationals and move into the Top 15 nationally. Her time also ranks sixth all-time in program history. Chaney later joined with <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/sanchez_kayla00.html">K… Sanchez</a>, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/pinnick_keia00.html">Ke… Pinnick</a> and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/golden_courtney00.html"… Golden</a> to win the 4x400m relay in 3:49.84. Golden was the final winner on the track as she took the 800m run in 2:20.65 (converted). The final victory for the women came in the pole vault as <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/carpenter_cara00.html">… Carpenter</a> won the event for the second week in a row with a clearance of 3.65m (11-11.75).</p><separator></separator><p>On the men’s side, two wins came in from the sprint events with <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/trice_lawrence00.html">… Trice</a> once again taking the top finish in the 60m dash as he ran 6.71 (converted) to provisionally qualify in the event. The men’s 4x400m relay also was victorious and lowered its season-best time to 3:09.38 as the group of <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/sanford_donald00.html">… Sanford</a>, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/kremer_justin00.html">J… Kremer</a>, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/battle_allante00.html">… Battle</a> and <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/phillip_joel00.html">Jo… Phillip</a> combined for the win and record the 10th-best time in school history.</p><separator></separator><p>Three other marks recorded on the day also rank among the Top 10 all-time in ASU history, including two from the men and one from the women. On the track, <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/sandys_jamie00.html">Ja… Sandys</a> clocked a time of 8.69 (converted) to finish fourth overall in the race while posting the sixth-best time in ASU history. Also posting the sixth-best mark in school history was <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/fazio_joe00.html">Joe Fazio</a> in the pole vault, who cleared 5.05m (16-06.75), bettering his previous indoor best by one centimeter. The final record-list improvement came from <a href="http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/c-track/mtt/lampley_ashley00.html">… Lampley</a> in the women’s weight throw as she hit a mark of 16.20m (53-01.75) to finish fourth on the day and eighth on the all-time list.</p><separator></separator><p>Although the Sun Devils did not send a large contingent of athletes to compete at Northern Arizona, they still did score in the team standings as the women won the event and the men took third. In the women’s team standings, the Sun Devils scored 42 points with NAU in second (34 points) and CS Fullerton third (24). The remaining women’s scores were Long Beach State in fourth (19), Southern Utah in fifth (nine) and UCLA in sixth (one). On the men’s side, UCLA took the title with 54 points with LBSU (33), ASU (21), SUU (13) and NAU (eight) rounding out the scoring.</p><separator></separator><p>A trio of meets are on the schedule for the Sun Devils next weekend as groups of athletes will compete at the NAU Invitational in Flagstaff, the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Husky Classic in Seattle. All three meets run Friday and Saturday, February 12-13.</p>
