Sun Devils finish first day of Men's Pac-10 Championship strong
The No. 16 Sun Devils, looking to repeat their championship performance of last year, ended the first day of the Pac-10 Championship on a high note.
After shooting a 15-over par 375 on the first 18 holes, Arizona State began the second round in ninth place. However, with four golfers in the lineup with championship experience, ASU made a furious comeback, carding a 2-over par 362 to finish the day in fourth at 17-over par 737.
Sophomore Jesper Kennegard, a member of last year's title-winning team, shot a team-high 1-over par 145 (72-73), placing him tied for seventh. Knut Borsheim finished tied for 13th after hitting back-to-back 73's, putting him at 2-over par 146. James Byrne (76-73), who earned third in last year's tournament, freshman Chan Kim (78-71) and Scott Pinckney (76-73) all completed the two-round day at 5-over par 149 and tied for 27th. Recently chosen to to participate in the prestigious Palmer Cup, Stephan Gross shot a 6-over par 150 (78-72) to finish tied for 31st.
Sitting fourth, Arizona State trails the University of Washington by 12 strokes, the University of Oregon by six, and Oregon State by just two.
