Sun Devil water polo falls to UCLA
The No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end on the road Sunday afternoon as the Sun Devils dropped a 14-4 decision to No. 1 UCLA in Los Angeles. The Sun Devils slipped to 19-10 overall and 6-5 in the MPSF while the Bruins closed out their regular season schedule with a 27-0 overall record and a 12-0 mark in the league.
The Sun Devils took an early 1-0 lead as Candice Phillippe converted a shot on the advantage with 5:13 remaining in the first stanza. But, from there, the Bruins scored 14 goals in a row, including five in the first, four in the second and five in the third for leads of 5-1, 9-1 and 14-1. In the final quarter of play, the Sun Devils did not allow a goal while Kelly Phelps scored three times with two coming on the advantage and another on a 5-meter penalty shot. Defensively, Caylinn Wallace stopped seven shots, all in the first half of play.
ASU will close out its regular season at home next weekend as the Sun Devils play host to No. 5 San Diego State at noon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The game with the Aztecs will be the final home contest for a trio of seniors, including Traci Aparicio, Katy Lawlor and Wallace.
