Sun Devil swimmers performed well at Olympic trials
Representatives of the Arizona State swimming program fared well at the U.S. Olympic Trials, held at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., last week. The Sun Devils had eleven athletes compete in the trials.
Nick Brunelli had the strongest showing as he qualified for the final of two events. Brunelli entered the final of the 100 free with the second-fastest time of the semi-finals and finished seventh, just shy of an Olympic berth. His semi-final time of 48.29 was a personal best for Brunelli. Brunelli also finaled in the 50 free, tying for seventh. His semi-final time of 21.99 was a personal-best for Brunelli. In addition the 50 and 100 free, Brunelli also competed in the 200 free where he finished 35th.
Caitlin Andrew performed well, qualifying for the semi-finals of both the 50 free and 100 butterfly. The All-American clocked in a personal-best 59.38 during the qualifying heats of the 100 fly and finished 14th overall in the semi-finals. Andrew earned another personal best in the semi-final of the 50 free by touching the wall in 25.57. She placed 16th in the 50 free. Andrew also competed in the 100 free, finishing 41st.
All-American C.J. Nuess competed in four events over the week. His best performance was in the 400 IM where he finished 28th in 4:26.87. Nuess also competed in the 1500 free (53rd), 200 breast (48th) and 200 IM (59th).
Incoming freshman Jordyn Green showed promise for the Sun Devils in the breaststroke events. The Reno, Nev., native placed 33rd in both the 100 and 200 breast. She earned a personal best in the 100 breast, clocking in a time of 1:11.08. Green also swam a personal-best in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:34.02.
John Dwelley, who recently finished his eligibility for the Sun Devils, touched the wall in 54.35 to place 38th in the 100 fly. Sean Boyle also competed in the 100 fly, placing 71st. Boyle finished 43rd in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.57 and 53rd in the 200 fly.
Junior-to-be Ashton Aubry competed in both butterfly events at the Olympic Trials. Aubry hit the wall at 1:00.96 to place 43rd overall in the 100 fly. She clocked in a time of 2:18.81 in the 200 fly. Teammate and fellow junior-to-be Jamie Martinez also competed in the 200 fly, finishing in 2:20.08. In the 200 back, Martinez placed 57th with a time of 2:17.03.
Other representatives of ASU that competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials include Lindsey Brown (100 free, 79th), Ashley Evans (200 IM, 92nd) and Ellis Schieman (200 fly, 90th; 400 free, 85th).
