Sun Devil offense red-hot as softball upends Stanford

Freshman Hillary Bach earned her 21st victory in the circle today giving up only one run in the first inning as the ASU offense went on to end the game early in five innings and upset the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal with a 10-1 victory today in Tempe. Leading the red hot offense was Krista Donnenwirth going 3-3 for the day tallying a home run to clinch the nine run lead in the second. The win puts the Sun Devils at 36-9 overall and 8-6 in the Pac-10 as Stanford falls to 37-6 on the season and 7-5 in conference play.

Stanford took an early one run lead in the first, but the Sun Devils powered back batting around the order to put up eight runs in the second. Getting the offense started was Krista Donnenwirth getting on base only to be scored by a throwing error by the Cardinal pitcher when Ashley Muenz laid down a sac bunt.  Stanford paid for their error when Caylyn Carlson ripped a double to the left center field fence to plate both Katie Crabb and Ashley Muenz. The rally continued when Jessica Mapes had a hard hit ball up the middle to score Kaylyn Carlson from second. Katelyn Boyd gave ASU a commanding lead with a three run ball crushed over the center field fence to score Jessica Mapes and Kaylyn Castillo. Capping off the second inning was Krista Donnenwirth with a solo shot over the left field fence to give ASU a seven run lead going into only the third inning.

The Sun Devil offense continued in the fourth inning, tallying two more runs of a long ball from Kaylyn Castillo over the score board in left field. Forcing a quick five inning game, pitcher Hillary Bach shut down the Cardinal offense through the last 4 innings of play giving her a 21-3 record on the season.

The Sun Devils will continue conference play next weekend as they host Washington on Friday, April 24th at 7:00pm and UCLA in a two game series on Saturday, April 25th at 1:00pm on Fox Sports Net and Sunday, April 26th at 12:00pm in Tempe at Farrington Stadium.
