Stevens named USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the Year
For the second time in her decorated career, Sarah Stevens, a senior on the Arizona State University track and field team, has been selected as the U.S. Track & Field, Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Women’s West Region Field Athlete of the Year, the Association announced Thursday. A 10-time All-American and two-time individual NCAA champion, Stevens is collecting her fourth career athletic honor from the Association after earning the 2007 West District and West Region honor outdoors and the 2007 West Region honor indoors.
Heading into the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in College Station, Texas, this weekend, Stevens ranks second nationally in both the shot put and the weight throw and, at one point this season, was the national leader in both events. Undefeated in both events against collegiate competitors this season, Stevens has recorded marks of 57-07.75 in the shot put and 70-10.00 in the weight throw to automatically qualify for both events at the national meet. In fact, she is one of four women to qualify for both events this weekend and the only one of those four that automatically qualified.
Stevens will look to become a two-time champion in the indoor shot put this weekend as she captured the crown in 2007 before placing second last year. She also is coming off a 2008 outdoor season in which she won the discus national title. Stevens also recently captured the shot put and weight throw at the MPSF Indoor Championships in Seattle, marking the third year in a row she won both events and the fourth year in a row that she won the shot put.
The eight Sun Devils in College Station this weekend will begin competition on Friday with the meet wrapping up on Saturday night. ESPN360.com will stream live coverage of the meet while live results can be followed at NCAA.com and AggieAtheltics.com.
