Softball slams past Notre Dame

A lights-out Hillary Bach and back-to-back home runs from Mandy Urfer and Renee Welty helped propel the No. 6 ASU softball team to a 3-0 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sunday morning in Fullerton, Calif. The win wraps ASU's weekend at the Judi Garman Classic with their record now standing at 25-5 overall.

To wrap up the weekend, Hillary Bach took to the mound against Notre Dame for the complete game shutout, as she kept the Irish fightin' for a hit all game, giving up only four hits all game long.

The Sun Devils seemed to come out sluggish as well in the game, as the ASU offense finally showed a scintilla of life in the third after a lead-off single from Michelle Nulliner was brought home after a 2-2 RBI single from Lesley Rogers to break the scoreless stalemate.

The Sun Devils came back again in the sixth inning as Mandy Urfer crushed a solo shot to center off a 1-0 pitch. Renee Welty dug in next to prove she could hit one further, launching the first pitch of the at-bat way out to center field as ASU for the third time on the weekend hit back-to-back home runs.

The win wraps the Judi Garman Classic for the Sun Devils as they return home next week to host the Long Beach State 49ers in a three-game series in Tempe at Farrington Stadium. The first game will be played Friday, March 20 at 7 p.m. followed with a double-header on Saturday March 21 at 3 and 5 p.m.
